The reported packaging winner

Fujifilm names Indonesia’s Sampurna Printshop and its Javatik Packaging project as the Best Innovation Award winner. The manufacturer describes a design inspired by Surakarta batik and wayang symbolism, using Gold, Green and Pink specialty toners on a Revoria Press PC2120. Those are the organiser’s descriptions; this note is not an independent assessment of the print sample.

Our studio take: assign the effect a role

Before adding a specialty colour to a packaging brief, identify the element it needs to emphasise. It might distinguish a product variant, bring attention to a small emblem or establish a clear focal point. If every area competes for the same effect, the reading order can become harder to follow.

Review the design with the effect turned off as well as on. The product name and essential information should still have a deliberate hierarchy. The extra colour can strengthen that hierarchy rather than carry the entire layout.

Ask for a sample of the actual process

Confirm which effect the proposed production method can deliver and how it will be represented in the proof. A metallic-looking screen colour is not evidence of the appearance of a particular toner, ink or foil.

Request a relevant physical sample on the intended stock before committing to the final treatment. Our takeaway is to connect the effect to a design purpose and a verified process. This is not an announcement that Chromatic owns the cited press or offers the award winner’s production configuration.
